Can a bad belt tensioner wheel cause overheating?
My 1997 Windstar is going to the red line, even on a 60 degree day while ideling. I already know the tensioner or wheel is bad. Can any slippage cause overheating? It has a new thermostat. There is NO charging problem.
The belt runs the water pump. If it is slipping, then the water pump will not be working as it should, and the coolant will not be circulating. This can lead to overheating, and also to head gasket failure.
Get the tensioner replaced
