What would happen if I replaced my 16lb radiator cap with a lower rated one?

I heard somewhere that replacing my stock radiator cap (16lbs) with a lower one (7-8lbs?) would relieve pressure from my hoses and be less stress on my cooling system.

I'm not EXACTLY sure what a radiator cap does as far as pressure ratings

It means that your cooling system would not be able to take away as much heat. When you put pressure on the system the coolant will have higher boiling point. Then it can carry away more heat without boiling. Your car was designed to run with a 16#
