How do I recharge (clean) my cold-air intake filter??

I have a 02 mitsubishi lancer and I bought it with a cold-air intake system (don't know manufacturer), and I was wondering if anyone knew how to recharge (clean) the filter on it, or should I just go buy a new one?? So if anyone has any experience in

if it is a truly washable filter I(K&N, or the like) they make a cleaning kit (usually found at your local auto parts store). with the kit, you spray the cleaner all over the filter, let it sit a second, then thoroughly wash the filter with water,
