I want to upgrade my old mercury thermostat to a new programmable one. The service technician said I should get a multi-stage thermostat, but I don't know if that is right. I have a 30 year-old oil burner that also acts as our hot water heater. Could

I seriously doubt you need a multi-stage stat for a 30 year old oil burner.
